halda, sweden s first pocketwatch factory

halda founded in 1887 factory owner henning hammarlund (1857-1922) in order produce pocket watches. name formed contraction of founder s surname -hammarlund( a).

hammarlund had, after education in particularly switzerland, returned sweden determined start swedish pocketwatch factory. location of purpose found in small community of svängsta mörrumsån in blekinge. first pocketwatches, haldauren presented 1889. in 1893, rewarded 2 medals @ world exhibition in chicago. in 1890, halda began produce typewriters , taximeters.

the company split

to cope ever-decreasing demand pocket watches during world war i, hammarlund developed new ideas manufacturing of typewriters , taxi meters. after financial problems however, pocket watch production put down in 1917 (about 8,000 pocket watches manufactured 1888 1917) , in 1920 company liquidated. instead, new company, ab halda fabriker, took on manufacturing of typewriters. successful production of taximeters, took fabriks ab halda taximeter (which origin of today s haldex ab (gearboxes, four-wheel drive, etc.) , halda trancometer ab (taximeters)) , production moved halmstad.

abu takes on pocket watch manufacturing

even production of pocket watches lived on under watchmaker carl borgström s housing, employee of halda fickursfabrik since 1904. borgström bought remaining stock of watch parts , machinery , again, along watchmakers fickursfabriken, started produce watches. company, ab urfabriken (abu), came produce pocketwatches until 1926 , included fishing equipment. abu, abu-garcia ab, still located in svängsta.

ab Åtvidaberg industries take on typewriter manufacturing

ab halda fabriker went bankrupt in 1927 each after company name changed again, time halda ab. business grew throughout 1930s. in 1938 halda taken on ab Åtvidabergs industrier , converted subsidiary under name facit-halda ab. halda, however, had remained typewriter brand in Åtvidaberg group year 1957 when switched facit ab. during 1970s, on 1,000 employees worked @ factory in svängsta. during late 1970s , 1980s, business worse, , in 1987 (the same year halda turned 100 years old) former owner, ericsson announced sold facit norwegian design data. facit holding ab formed in connection this. despite production of electronic typewriters , focus on manufacturing personal computers , printed circuit boards company s position deteriorated further. @ end of 1992-1993, company went bankrupt, , typewriter production in svängsta put down.

the brand resumes

in 2009, halda given new life , @ initiative of watch entrepreneur , engineer mikael sandström has developed new watch innovative concept of time-platform , 2 interchangeable time-modules. 21st century halda-watches based on same drive henning hammarlund established: there never room compromise in quality or function. therefore, in developing first modern halda-watch, company worked swedish astronaut christer fuglesang tested watch in extreme environment—on latest space mission, sts-128.
