tufts competes in new england small college athletic conference—the nescac—in ncaa division iii. mascot jumbo, college mascot appear in webster s dictionary. mascot comes p. t. barnum s circus, barnum 1 of original trustees of tufts college. according legend, jumbo elephant heroically jumped in front of train, sacrificing himself save younger elephant dying. jumbo s stuffed skin donated school, , displayed until 1975 fire destroyed body, except tail, had been removed conservation work. now, statue of elephant prominent landmark on quad, near barnum hall, biology building.


recently, tufts has become 1 of top athletic schools in division iii. school has consistently ranked in top ten of learfield director s cup, ranks top division i, ii, , iii athletic programs in country awarding points in pre-determined number of sports men , women. in 2015-16, tufts ranked 4th in country, , in 2014-15 tufts ranked 9th. tufts men s lacrosse team won school s first ever ncaa team championship in 2010, beating salisbury state university in championship game. lost in 2011 salisbury in championship. in 2012, women s field hockey team won first national championship, beating montclair state university 2–1 in finals. coach tina mcdavitt won diii national coach of year in 2012, well. field hockey team had been national runners-up in 2008. women s softball team won 3 consecutive ncaa division iii national championships in 2013, 2014 , 2015. men s lacrosse team won second ncaa division iii national championship in 2014 , third championship in 2015, beating lynchburg. on december 6, 2014, men s soccer team won first-ever diii national championship, defeating wheaton college 4-2. jumbos repeated feat 2 years later, winning diii national championship in 2016 defeating calvin college 1-0. men s , women s squash teams have been historically successful, ranking within top 30 teams in nation.
