the school s sports teams, wearing crimson , royal blue, called kansas jayhawks. participate in ncaa s division , in big 12 conference. ku has won thirteen national championships: 5 in men s basketball (two helms foundation championships , 3 ncaa championships), 3 in men s indoor track , field, 3 in men s outdoor track , field, 1 in men s cross country , 1 in women s outdoor track , field. home course ku cross country rim rock farm. recent championship came on june 8, 2013 when ku women s track , field team won ncaa outdoor in eugene, oregon becoming first university of kansas women s team win national title.

ku football dates 1890, , has played in orange bowl 3 times: 1948, 1968, , 2008. coached david beaty, hired in 2014. in 2008, under leadership of mark mangino, #7 jayhawks emerged victorious in first bcs bowl game, fedex orange bowl, 24–21 victory on #3 virginia tech hokies. capstone victory marked end of successful season in school history, in jayhawks went 12–1 (.923). team plays @ memorial stadium, underwent $31 million renovation add anderson family football complex, adding football practice facility adjacent stadium complete indoor partial practice field, weight room, , new locker room.


the ku men s basketball team has fielded team every year since 1898. jayhawks perennial national contender, coached bill self. team has won 5 national titles, including 3 ncaa tournament championships in 1952, 1988, , 2008. basketball program second winningest program in college basketball history overall record of 2,070–806 through 2011–12 season. team plays @ allen fieldhouse. perhaps best recognized player wilt chamberlain, played in 1950s.

the university of kansas has had more teams (70) compete in national debate tournament other university. kansas has won tournament 5 times (1954, 1970, 1976, 1983, , 2009) , had 14 teams make final four. kansas trails northwestern (13), dartmouth (6), , harvard (6) tournaments won. kansas won 1981–82 copeland award.
