maximum ratings
the maximum collector-to-emitter voltage 2n3055, other transistors, depends on resistance path external circuit provides between base , emitter of transistor; 100 ohms 70 volt breakdown rating, vcer, , collector-emitter sustaining voltage, vceo(sus), given on semiconductors. 100 vcbo breakdown voltage (the maximum voltage between collector , base, emitter open, unrealistic arrangement in practical circuits) given voltage rating, can cause confusion. manufacturers specify vces voltage rating 2n3055.
the total power dissipation (written pd in american datasheets, ptot in european ones) depends on heatsink 2n3055 connected. infinite heatsink, is: when case temperature 25 degrees, power rating 115w (some manufacturers specify 117w), applications (and when ambient temperature high) lower power rating expected, per manufacturer s power derating curve. device designed operate efficient heatsink, care must taken mount device properly, else physical damage or worsened power handling may result, cases or heatsinks not flat.
transition frequency, ft
the 1967 rca transistor manual, sc-13, did not mention measure of high frequency performance 2n3055; 1971 sc-15 manual transition frequency, ft, of @ least 800 khz specified (at ic = 1 a) , fhfe (the frequency @ small-signal current gain drops 3 db) specified @ 1a 10 khz minimum. other manufacturers around time specify similar values (e.g. in 1973 philips gave ft > 0.8 mhz , fhfe > 15 khz 2n3055 device).
rca 1977 had changed specification give 2.5 minimum magnitude of small-signal gain @ f = 1 mhz, giving minimum ft of 2.5 mhz (and 4 mhz mj2955). modern 2n3055 datasheets often, not always, specify ft of 2.5 mhz (minimum) because improvements have been made on time (especially move epitaxial manufacturing process). nevertheless, 2n3055 (and many other power transistors originating era) cannot assumed have great high-frequency performance , there can degradation of phase-shift , open-loop gain within audio frequency range. modern successors 2n3055 can more suitable in fast-switching circuits or high-end audio power amplifiers.
