the karnali basin hosts of nepal s famous national parks. protected area constitutes 14% of total basin area, including 4 national parks, 1 wildlife reserve, 1 hunting reserve , 2 buffer zones. basin , influence area constitute 27% of total protected area, 63% of national park, 25% of buffer zone , 31% of wildlife reserve. significance of of protected areas summarised below:


shey phoksundo national park in dolpa district, established in 1984, situated in trans-himalayan region of northwestern nepal , represents tibetan plateau ecosystem. park, covering area of 3,555 km (1,373 sq mi), contains luxuriant forests composed of blue pine, spruce, cypress, poplar, fir , birch. habitat endangered snow leopard, blue sheep , many species of birds such himalayan monal, blood pheasant, cheer pheasant , snow partridge. religious buddhist site.


rara national park located in mugu district small area in jumla district in mountain region of northwestern nepal , smallest park size of 106 km (41 sq mi). includes rara lake, spread on 10.8 km (4.2 sq mi), biggest lake in nepal, @ elevation of 2,990 m (9,810 ft). oval lake has maximum length of 5 km (3.1 mi) , width of 3 km (1.9 mi). vegetation of park consists of coniferous trees such blue pine, rhododendrons, black juniper, west himalayan spruce, oak , himalayan cypress. fauna includes musk deer, himalayan black bear, leopard, goral, jackal, himalayan tahr, yellow-throated marten, dhole, wild boar, gray langur, rhesus macaque , otter. common bird species include migrant waterfowl, coot, great-crested , black-necked grebes, red-crested pochard, mallard, common teal, common merganser, himalayan snowcock , chukar partridge.


bardia national park largest , undisturbed protected area in terai region of nepal himalayas, covering 968 km (374 sq mi) on southern slopes of sivalik hills. bordered in south babai river, , west girwa river, tributary of karnali. @ chisapani gorge, swift-flowing karnali river emerges shiwalik range onto broad plain , flows purposefully through semi-tropical jungle. park famous 2 herds of wild asian elephants, great number of deer species, gaur, nilgai, himalayan tahr, serow , goral. karnali supports endangered mugger crocodile, fish-eating gharial, few remaining specimen of gangetic dolphin , golden mahseer; latter weigh 41 kilograms (90 lb).


other protected areas include dhorpatan hunting reserve and, river crosses nepal–india border, katarniaghat wildlife sanctuary, part of dudhwa tiger reserve in uttar pradesh india.
