alisher nava born in 1441 in herat, in north-western afghanistan. during alisher s lifetime, herat ruled timurid empire , became 1 of leading cultural , intellectual centres in muslim world. alisher belonged chagatai amir (or mīr in persian) class of timurid elite. alisher s father, ghiyāth ud-din kichkina (the little), served high-ranking officer in palace of shāhrukh mirzā, ruler of khorasan. mother served prince s governess in palace. ghiyāth ud-din kichkina served governor of sabzawar @ 1 time. died while alisher young, , ruler of khorasan, babur ibn-baysunkur, adopted guardianship of young man.


alisher schoolmate of husayn bayqarah later become sultan of khorasan. alisher s family forced flee herat in 1447 after death of shāhrukh created unstable political situation. family returned khorasan after order restored in 1450s. in 1456, alisher , bayqarah went mashhad ibn-baysunkur. following year ibn-baysunkur died , alisher , bayqarah parted ways. while bayqarah tried establish political power, alisher pursued studies in mashhad, herat, , samarkand. after death of abu sa id mirza in 1469, husayn bayqarah seized power in herat. consequently, alisher left samarkand join service. bayqarah ruled khorasan uninterruptedly forty years. alisher remained in service of bayqarah until death on 3 january 1501. buried in herat.


alisher nava led ascetic lifestyle, never marrying or having concubines or children.
