spip 1 of central characters of series, spirou s domesticated, courageous , sharp, grouchy pet squirrel. companion in adventures. spip cannot talk, thoughts, witty or sarcastic, displayed reader, reflecting grouchy mood. s not pleased find himself in danger, helpful in situation as can. on several authorship periods character has evolved:

spip saved spirou in rob-vel s , jijé s first joint adventure l héritage de bill money (the inheritance of bill money, 1938), , on stands master s side. under rob-vel presence visual, serving gnaw ropes bind master, or adding comical detail. under jijé s authorship gains capacity speak through thought balloons (similar snoopy , garfield). point given state opinion on situation, in comical manner, , communications appear understood.

franquin period

in beginning, tome , janry continued spip fournier had, letting him make biting remarks whatever situation in, providing comedy relief , contributing plots. however, series evolved , grew more dramatic , mature, spip s role reduced, comments becoming less frequent until stopped talking entirely. in later albums s more or less background character, still spirou s side seldom noticed anyone. parodied in spirou à moscou, after kidnapping spends of story band-aid covering mouth, , spirou , fantasio don t notice it.
