on march 8, 1943 wollheim sister ruth wollheim (born in 1910), wife rosa (née mandelbrod, born in 1912) , son peter uriel (born in 1939) arrested gestapo , brought gathering point jews in große hamburger straße (de) in berlin, germany. on march 12, 1943 whole family deported auschwitz. while wollheim singled out slave labour, sister, wife , child gassed in concentration camp.
wollheim brought auschwitz camp iii, monowitz, had work slave labourer i.g. farbenindustrie ag, helping build new buna-factory iv until evacuation of auschwitz on january 18, 1945. on 1 of so-called death marches of camp inmates being evacuated ss, wollheim managed flee. after war settled in lübeck, british zone of occupation. engaged in lübeck jewish community, elected president, , helped rebuild jewish life in west germany. elected second chairman of central committee of liberated jews in british zone ( zentralkomitee der befreiten juden in der britischen zone ) , cofounder of jewish trust corporation in british zone. later became chairman of association of northwestern germany s jewish congregations (german: verband der jüdischen gemeinden nordwestdeutschlands) , member of board of central council of jews in germany.
