following successful realisation of doctor s home planet of gallifrey on screen in deadly assassin, producer graham williams wanted gallifrey story. script editor anthony read approached david weir whom had worked before. weir s script, six-part story, planned final story of season 15 , commissioned on 18 july 1977. weir s script had elements drawn asian cultures, , included race of cat-people links gallifrey. scenes included gladiatorial duel in stadium filled cat-people. read , director gerald blake, upon reading finished script, determined story impossible shoot on doctor s budget , story abandoned mid-august 1977. 2 weeks spare before filming, read , williams co-wrote replacement script in form of invasion of time. when asked weir s story @ fan convention years later, williams not recall title , made name killer cats of geng singh, title story became known in fan circles.
