rising sun located @ 39°41′58″n 76°3′47″w / 39.69944°n 76.06306°w / 39.69944; -76.06306 (39.6994, -76.0630).


the town became known rising sun located in disputed “nottingham lots” along border between colonial pennsylvania , maryland. area claimed william penn , settled quakers in 1702 on objection of maryland. when charles mason , jeremiah dixon conducted survey of order in 1760s, rising sun found located in maryland.


around 1720, henry reynolds established stone tavern on nottingham lot no. 17 serve stage coach stop. according local lore, erected sign on entrance of tavern depicting rays of sun @ dawn , words rising sun . tavern located along route between baltimore , philadelphia, became known meeting place business, politics, elections, , other public activities. local legend states tavern more known surrounding village (summer hill) time town’s first post office established around 1815, rising sun chosen official name. there conjecture post office located in tavern.


when town’s incorporation in 1860, commissioners had slate sidewalks installed, erected street lamps, , hired lamplighter doubled bailiff , street maintenance man. 6 years later philadelphia , baltimore central railroad began serve rising sun. of town’s current structure has been built since then.
