the earliest date given viking raid of britain 789 when, according anglo-saxon chronicle, portland attacked. more exact report dates 8 june 793, when cloister @ lindisfarne pillaged foreign seafarers. these raiders, expeditions extended 9th century, gradually followed armies , settlers brought new culture , tradition markedly different of prevalent anglo-saxon society. these enclaves rapidly expanded, , viking warriors establishing areas of control such extent reasonably described kingdoms.
