after organizational changes following first usac/cart split, pocono 500 switched cart series beginning in 1982. race moved june august after track added second nascar winston cup series race schedule. moving august allowed race distanced indy, , set 2 3 weeks after michigan 500, giving teams more preparation time between 500-mile races.
the increasingly rough condition of course made race demanding, , led high attrition , surprise winners.
following 1989 event, track officially deemed rough , unsuitable indy cars. circuit still had metal boilerplate retaining walls, lacked catch fencing around entire perimeter, lacked proper runoff areas, , criticized roughness. pocono 500 removed schedule indefinitely, neither track management nor series officials interested in reviving event.
though track safety conditions stated reason, track management believed event money-loser facility. furthermore, according cart medical director dr. steve olvey, during 1980s track s medical facilities grossly inadequate, track owner dr. joe mattioli himself listed track doctor, despite profession being dentistry.
