the first president of ohio agricultural , mechanical college edward orton, sr. served 1829 1899. during orton s term, university became ohio state university, in 1878. karen a. holbrook took office in 2002 , first female president. e. gordon gee president served 2 terms after serving 1990-1998 , returning in 2007-2013. michael v. drake, former chancellor of university of california, irvine, assumed role of university president on june 30, 2014. drake serves first african american president of university.
