orion first appeared in new gods #1 (february 1971), , created writer/artist jack kirby.


jack kirby era

orion appeared in new gods #1 (feb.–march 1971) part of jack kirby s fourth world titles published in 1970s. other titles included in metaseries superman s pal jimmy olsen, mister miracle , forever people. when titles canceled, orion , fellow new gods characters unseen until dc returned fourth world concept few years later.


return of new gods

following appearance in final issue of 1st issue special, dc revived both new gods , mister miracle series, continuing numbering original series. new stories done without jack kirby , featured number of changes of concept character of orion. character s astro harness , trademark helmet replaced more standard superhero costume yellow mask. new gods title again canceled in 1978 story wrapped in 2 issues of adventure comics featuring final battle between orion , father, darkseid. in battle darkseid supposedly annihilated.


this version of orion returned in three–issue arc of justice league of america in of new gods captured forces of apokolips. orion , fellow new gods, metron, mister miracle, , big barda, summoned aid of justice league , justice society aid them in freeing forces of new genesis. story featured return, , eventual defeat, of orion s father.


post-crisis

following crisis on infinite earths, orion featured in 1989–1990 series new gods vol. 3 , served short stint in justice league friend lightray during keith giffen/j. m. dematteis run. orion returned main character in new gods vol. 4 later relaunched jack kirby s fourth world. orion again served member of justice league during grant morrison s tenure on title, character not receive own title until 2000.

orion series penciled , written walt simonson, centered around eponymous character , ran 25 issues (june 2000–june 2002). john byrne filled in penciller main stories in issues 13 , 14. issues #1–5 reprinted dc comics in trade paperback gates of apokolips. included reprints portions secret origins of super-villains 80-page giant #1 , legends of dc universe 80-page giant #2.


a backup ran consistently in orion book tales of new gods . simonson invited fellow artists , writers provide short story supplementing issue s main action.
