history
early years: self titled album (1998-2000)

gypsy fly formed in 1998 @ glenbard north high school in carol stream (the same alma mater smashing pumpkins frontman billy corgan). original line-up consisted of troy thompson (lead vocals), tom hultsch (guitar), zach pospisil (bass), , dave hultsch (drums). after self-releasing first album, gypsy fly gained attention on local , national level. interviewed chicago’s wzrd (88.3 fm) radio, played local shows @ afternight soundstage in melrose park, illinois televised on local television stations, , performed on jenny jones show. band’s single “stripper girlfriend” received radio attention, , play in local retail stores.

bittersweetness: pink lavender (2000-2003)

after success of first album, gypsy fly channeled more of indy influences, such ben lee rancid, black flag, idlewild, pavement, , red hot chili peppers, create second album. album had more of edgy energy , sound different compared harder sounds of limp biscuit , other popular bands during time. unique sound propelled gypsy fly further. chosen band of week in 94.7 “the zone” (wzzn-fm) contest , won bill @ house of blues. thereafter, performed @ metro in chicago, , participated in vans warped tour performing @ first midwest bank amphitheatre in tinley park, illinois , marcus amphitheater in milwaukee, wisconsin, in addition playing @ tower records stores after initial album release. in 2003, after gypsy fly’s first set of shows support album, zach departed band. band played fill-in bass players until found bassist jay diebert, then, during same year, lead vocalist troy left band.

transformation: labeled (2005-2007)

with tom on lead vocals, gypsy fly released ep , received honorable mention original song “young again” annual billboard world songwriting contest. placed in top 1,500 entries. also, radio dj james van osdol gave extensive radio play “disappear,” played weekly on 94.7 “the zone” (wzzn-fm). yet, “california” praised “the strongest track” because “it driven strong bass line , more creative vocals.”

new beginning: breathing air (2007-2009)

breathing air, first full-length album restructured band, guitar driven, more poppy previous records. incidentally, lou hinkhouse, had worked smashing pumpkins, shot video gypsy fly’s single “i wanna off,” debuted on chicago music television show jbtv. song “all needed” played on “q101” (101.1 wkqx), , trio regular guests on fearlessradio.com’s new music binge. during time, had weekly half-hour podcast on itunes called gypsy fly music net.

new attitude: silver or lead (2009-present)

finally capturing band’s energy of playing live, silver or lead has more serious, yet irreverent tone. in review of album, dean ramos of illinois entertainer said, “gypsy fly can without doubt ‘rawk!’ best of them.” such statement describes band’s coming of age. silver or lead, band received airplay , radio station interviews, , gypsy fly’s music played on unconventional formats such waddle & silvy show on espn 1000 (wmvp-am). band featured on “q101” website up-and-coming band contest sponsored old style beer. director lou hinkhouse returned shoot video “play fire,” using same camera used film book of eli. gypsy fly continued promote album @ various venues throughout city of chicago , surrounding suburbs.
