borden s military career began in 1893, when entered king s canadian hussars. in 1897, member of queen victoria s diamond jubilee contingent received jubilee medal. 1899 rose major in command of corps. @ outbreak of second boer war borden received commission lieutenant 1st battalion, canadian mounted rifles (which shortly after death became known royal canadian dragoons (special service force)) , allotted 1st battalion, b squadron officer commanding 4th troop. brought attention of field marshal lord roberts , british commander-in-chief in south africa, repeatedly swimming richard turner across vet river @ coetzee s drift, draw fire of boers dug in on north bank (5 may 1900).


borden fought distinction @ battle of faber s put (30 may 1900). battle 1 of desperate actions faced canadians while campaigning in south africa: 27 killed, 41 wounded, , loss of large number of horses. field marshal lord roberts reported: lieut. h. l. borden, gallant conduct in swimming vet river under fire, 5 may, , in capturing of enemy’s wagons on 30 may.


the death of lieutenant harold lothrop borden @ witpoort on 16 july 1900 occurred when lieutenant john edgar burch , he, while assisting royal irish fusiliers , new zealanders withstand boer assault on witpoort ridge, led counter-attack. successful, boer marksmen, standing less 200 metres away, shot them stood lead assault. lord roberts reported war office borden , burch killed while gallantly leading men in counter attack upon enemy s flank @ critical juncture of assault upon our position.
