born in cesena, fontana started career hometown s a.c. cesena, made professional debut vis pesaro, loaned during 1986–87 season. before decade over, played in same predicament modest club, spal 1907.

at age of 40, fontana confirmed palermo 2007–08 season, starting rosanero impressively results despite being second-oldest player in whole serie a, behind 44-year-old marco ballotta of s.s. lazio, goalkeeper.


in 2008–09, returned bench following signing of italian international marco amelia, making debut on 26 october 2008 half-time replacement injured amelia in 1–3 home loss acf fiorentina, game saw him being welcomed standing ovation whole stadium, moment later defined biggest emotion in football career . played in following match, against u.s. lecce.


in december 2008 fontana put out of first-team squad, after disagreements club regarding position in squad – demoted low third-choice, behind albanian youngster samir ujkani. palermo chairman maurizio zamparini confirmed have formally authorized him start searching new club play regularly, player stayed until end of campaign, retiring shortly after.
