the karnali provides upper range gangetic river dolphin (platanista gangetica), largest freshwater mammals found on indian subcontinent. considered vulnerable species under cites appendix 1 , classified endangered on iucnredlist (iucn, 2004). river dolphins legally protected animals in nepal endangered mammal , fall under schedule of protected list of national parks , wildlife conservation act, 1973. living @ upstream range limit, dolphins in karnali river particularly vulnerable threats habitat degradation. dolphins need deep pools of water. found in places human activities intense , accidentally caught local people live in lower karnali basin. karnali river supports last potentially viable population of ganges river dolphin in nepal. these dolphins @ farthest upstream range , isolated girijapur barrage (a low gated dam), located 16 kilometres (10 mi) downstream of nepal–india border.
a high dam has been planned time upstream of dolphins current (or @ least recent) range in karnali river, nepal. if built, structure eliminate small amount of dolphin habitat in nepal’s last river potentially viable dolphin population. disturbance , environmental degradation associated geotechnical feasibility studies , bridge , road construction dam may have contributed decline in number , range of dolphins or susu above nepal-india border. ghaghara furthest upstream in dolphin range.
