prominent representatives of cretan school during 17th century father emmanuel tzanes (Εμμανουήλ Τζάνες, 1610–1690), emmanuel lambardos , theodoros poulakis (Θεόδωρος Πουλάκης, 1622–1692). cretan icon painters continued flourish, until mid-century, when ottoman turks occupied island except candia, fell after twenty years of siege in 1669. after ottoman occupation of crete, centre of greek painting moved ionian islands, remained under venetian rule until napoleonic wars. new artistic movement created called heptanese school influenced western european artistic trends. many cretan artists migrated heptanese or western europe enjoy artistic freedom. successive occupation of ionian islands french , british allowed heptanese remain centre of greek art until independence of greece in 1830.
