this site supports rich invertebrate , amphibian fauna. wide range of seminatural habitats present, including valley mire, open water, swamp , tall fen. these habitats have restricted distribution in mendip hills. priddy pools situated in central mendip lead orefield , ecology of area bears mark of lead industry. northern pool dammed in 1850s provide supply of running water sifting , washing of slag. lead processed @ st cuthbert s works until 1908. hydrology of site complex. nutrient-poor water flows springs in north of site st cuthbert s swallet disappears before re-emerging @ wookey hole. valley mire has developed in area south of springs. sphagnum recurvum , sphagnum auriculatum frequent mosses, , range of higher plants can found. additional interest lies in flora can tolerate high concentrations of lead in soil such spring sandwort (minuartia verna) , moss ditrichum plumbicola.
priddy pools supports rich fauna. fifteen species of dragonfly have been recorded; supporting population of downy emerald in mendips, site hosts notable four-spotted chaser (libellula quadrimaculata) , ruddy darter (sympetrum sanguineum). 5 british species of amphibian occur , there populations of great crested newt (triturus cristatus), smooth newt (triturus vulgaris) , palmate newt (triturus helveticus). 3 species of reptile, viviparous lizard (lacerta vivipara), adder (vipera berus), grass snake (natrix natrix), , @ least 2 species of fish; european perch, (perca fluviatilis) , three-spined stickleback (gasterosteus aculeatus) present. breeding birds include moorhen (gallinula chloropus), coot (fulica atra), mallard (anas platyrhynchos), reed bunting (emberiza schoeniclus) , sedge warbler (acrocephalus schoenobaenus). priddy pools important research site. detailed study of algae in northern pool carried out in late 1960s , 1970s, part of international biological programme.
