the potsdam sandstone lies unconformably on surface of precambrian metamorphic rock. earliest unit in marine-transgressive sedimentary rock sequence deposited during paleozoic sea level rose gradually inundate craton of paleocontinent of laurentia. rock, formed sediments eroded off unvegetated terrestrial landscapes , deposited in near-shore coastal environments, consists entirely of sand-size quartz grains held quartz cement. ranges in color gray tan, yellow, , red, colors imparted small amounts of red iron oxide mineral hematite, fe2o3, , yellow iron oxide mineral goethite, feo(oh).


as sea level rose in depositional environment, increasing amounts of carbonate minerals deposited in sediment, result unit grades upward dolomitic sandstone in upper potsdam , sandy dolostone @ base of overlying theresa formation.
