synopsis
prologue

an overture in typical lullian style precedes allegorical prologue set in forest of erymanthus diane (diana) , l amour (cupid) arguing rule on forest dwellers. quarrel settled jupiter decrees love reign on hearts 1 day every year. diane vows after hippolyte , aricie.


act 1

the temple of diane in troezen


the story concerns greek hero theseus, king of athens (thésée in opera), wife phèdre (phaedra) , thésée s son woman, hippolyte (hippolytus). hippolyte in love young woman, aricie, daughter of thesée s enemy, pallas, , has compelled take vow of chastity diane. before so, hippolyte reveals love , goddess promises protect couple. enrages phèdre, has been nursing illicit desire stepson herself. news arrives thésée has made journey underworld , dead. means phèdre may pursue passion hippolyte , offer him crown of athens.


act 2

hades, underworld


théséé descends hades rescue friend pirithous, has been captured when tried seduce pluton (pluto) s wife, proserpine (proserpina). thésée has special advantage: father, god neptune, has promised answer prayers on 3 occasions during life. first prayer theseus makes allowed reach hades. @ entrance, fights fury tisiphone, makes through pluton s court. pluton condemns thésée share same fate friend allows trial. when thésée again loses, calls on neptune free him (his second prayer), , pluton powerless hold him back. thésée leaves, however, furies (les parques) foretell thésée may leave hades find hell in own household.

phèdre meets hippolyte, offers condolences on bereavement. mistaking concern love, phaedra confesses passion. hippolyte shocked , curses her. phèdre tries kill herself sword hippolyte snatches her. @ moment, thésée arrives unexpectedly. unsure make of scene, fears hippolyte trying rape wife. phèdre rushes off , hippolyte nobly refuses denounce stepmother. serves increase father s suspicions, reinforced phaedra s confidante, oenone. thésée decides use last prayer neptune punish hippolyte.


act 4

a grove sacred diane sea


hippolyte realises must go exile , aricie vows go him wife. forest people celebrate diana. monster emerges sea – instrument of thésée s punishment. hippolyte tries fight disappears in cloud of flames. phèdre arrives, distraught, , admits cause of hippolyte s death.


act 5

a grove sacred diana sea


thésée has learnt truth phèdre, before killed herself. full of remorse, threatens suicide neptune reveals son still alive, diane s protection. however, thésée never see him again.


the forest of aricia, italy


aricie wakes up, still mourning hippolyte. diane tells has found husband girl, aricie inconsolable until goddess reveals hippolyte, alive , well. opera ends general rejoicing.
