kaniakapūpū current , commonly used name of site , palace. means singing of land shells in hawaiian language. name refers kāhuli (oʻahu tree snails) once abundant in area and, according hawaiian folklore, able vocalize , sing sweet songs @ night. archaeologist susan a. lebo , anthropologist james m. bayman, writing in 2001, claim name modern misnomer, possibly originating in 20th century. moʻolelo (oral accounts) period associate name remnants of stone structure southeast of house, believed heiau (temple) dedicated lono, hawaiian god of fertility , healing. tradition states king may have chosen build house on heiau because of mana (spiritual power) associated area. contemporaneous hale aliʻi (ʻiolani palace) built on site of heiau called kaʻahaimauli.

luakaha ( place of relaxation ) name of property during king s lifetime, , originates name of traditional ʻili kū (land division) of ahupuaʻa of honolulu, encompassed third of forested upper slopes of nuʻuanu valley. there no records of house having specific name, though when in use referred king s house, cottage, or retreat in luakaha or nuʻuanu . luakaha 1 of many strategic grounds occupied king kalanikūpule during king kamehameha s invasion of island of oahu in 1795. traditions state kamehameha rested troops near site during campaign, culminated in decisive battle of nuʻuanu in many of defeated oahu warriors pushed off nuʻuanu pali deaths.
