the 5 dynasties
later liang (907–23)

kai ping tong bao (chinese: 開平通寶; pinyin: kāipíng tōng bǎo) , kai ping yuan bao coins have been issued zhu wen when overthrew tang in 907. however, few specimens of each coin known, , 1 of each shown in china national museum , china history museum. authorities doubt authenticity.


later tang (923–36)

tian cheng yuan bao (chinese: 天成元寶; pinyin: tiānchéng yuánbǎo) issued emperor ming in tiancheng period (926–29).


later jin (936–47)

tian fu yuan bao (chinese: 天福元寶; pinyin: tiānfú yuánbǎo) issued emperor gao zong in tianfu period 938. 939, private casting permitted few months, resulting in coins of adulterated alloy.


later han (948–51)

han yuan tong bao (chinese: 漢元通寶; pinyin: hàn yuán tōng bǎo) coin s pattern based on kai yuan. in 948, during reign of emperor gao zu, president of department of imperial feasts requested permission set mint in capital (kaifeng, henan). there no specific record of casting han yuans.


later zhou (951–60)

zhou yuan tong bao (chinese: 周元通寶; pinyin: zhōuyuán tōng bǎo) coins issued emperor chai rongshi zong 955. pattern based on kai yuan coin. cast melted-down bronze statues buddhist temples. when reproached this, emperor uttered cryptic remark effect buddha not mind sacrifice. said emperor himself supervised casting @ many large furnaces @ of palace. coins have amuletic properties because made buddhist statues, , particularly effective in midwifery – hence many later-made imitations.
