written robert holmes , submitted story editor donald tosh on 25 april 1965. four-part story idea involved doctor , 3 companions arriving on uninhabited planet discover space craft controlled robots while human occupants lie in suspended animation waiting additional crew members needed once again operate crashed ship. doctor , companions taken captive , trained robots replacement crew members, 3 additional crew members required, member of doctor s party proves least useful callously killed off human crew. holmes first story submission series, , rejected due robots role being similar of mechanoids in chase previous season. holmes later resubmit story idea producer peter bryant on 20 may 1968 led commissioning of become krotons.
