written christopher langley, storyline four-part story submitted production office on 30 december 1973. subsequently commissioned scripts on 24 january 1974 , planned second story of season 12. dropped on 17 june 1974 , replaced lucarotti s ark in space.

the ark in space (lucarotti)

written john lucarotti, script came after space station rejected , lucarotti suggested terrance dicks replacement writer on strength of moonbase 3 script. story use same space station setting space station, setting being dictated production office means of saving money having share sets revenge of cybermen. commissioned in june 1974, lucarotti devised concept of ark, space station housed huge plot of countryside size of kent - sort of home counties in space. six-part story concerned invasion of ark species called delc, spore-like fungus separate heads , bodies. final episode have doctor defeating delc leader hitting out space golf club, , indeed lucarotti planned give each episode frivolous title, citing puffball title of episode , golfball title of final episode. when draft scripts arrived home in corsica, holmes , hinchcliffe felt far ambitious , complicated realise on programme s budget , lucarotti had over-conceptualised story. replaced different story same title robert holmes, shared setting previous version.

the sea of fear

written brian hayles submitted storyline production office on 9 march 1974. story involves doctor , sarah becoming caught in experiment determine true ancestors of humankind.

written douglas adams, story submitted around middle of 1974. involved space ship leaving earth , filled affluent useless members of society. adams later adapted material b ark storyline of hitchhiker s guide galaxy.
