after graduation radcliffe in 1921, dykes continued teach @ dunbar high school until 1929 when returned howard university member of english faculty. excellent teacher, dykes won number of teaching awards during 15 years of service @ howard university. publications include readings negro authors schools , colleges co-authored lorenzo dow turner , otelia cromwell (1931) , negro in english romantic thought: or study in sympathy oppressed (1942). in 1934 dykes began writing column in seventh-day adventist periodical message magazine, continued until 1984.


in 1920 dykes joined seventh-day adventist church, , in 1944 joined faculty of small , unaccredited seventh-day adventist oakwood college in huntsville, alabama, chair of english department. first staff member @ oakwood hold doctoral qualification , instrumental in assisting college gain accreditation. dykes retired in 1968 returned oakwood teach in 1970 , continued until 1975. in 1973 oakwood college library named in honor , in 1980 made professor emerita. in 1975 general conference of seventh-day adventist church presented dykes citation of excellence honouring outstanding contribution seventh-day adventist education. dykes died in huntsville on october 29, 1986, @ age of ninety-three.
