after time on kentucky court of appeals, hines returned practicing law in frankfort, kentucky. in 1886, hines began writing series of 4 articles discussing northwest conspiracy basil w. duke s southern bivouac magazine. magazine dedicated memory of lost cause of confederacy, less adversarial similar southern magazines, gaining larger northern readership similar journals. first of articles printed in december 1886 issue. however, after consulting former confederate president jefferson davis @ davis home in mississippi, hines did not name on northern side assisted in conspiracy. after writing first article, hines attacked not being more forthcoming regarding participants both newspapers reviewers (particularly louisville times) , southern readers, discouraged hines publishing more accounts of northwest conspiracy.


hines died in 1898 in frankfort, , buried in fairview cemetery in bowling green, kentucky, in hines series of plots. among hines family plots grave site of duncan hines, second cousin twice removed.
