the component operates sixteen (out of original order 18) boeing e-3a awacs aircraft of based on boeing 707 airframe (the component operated 3 (3) boeing 707 trainer cargo aircraft, these have been retired since 2011). these 16 aircraft of nato e-3a component registered in luxembourg part of country’s contribution nato awacs programme.


since coming service in 1980s, aircraft , onboard systems , associated ground-based equipment have undergone regular upgrading. 2 major modernization programmes have been accomplished since 1990s. more recent of these, midterm modernization programme, completed in december 2008. included retrofitting of 17 e-3as improved navigation systems, digital communication systems , 5 additional workstations, enhancement of 2 mission simulators. result of project nato awacs able continue fulfill intended role important nato asset maintaining peace , security.


the component’s 2 operational e-3a squadrons , former tca squadron have total of thirty multinational aircrews 14 of nato’s 29 nations: belgium, denmark, germany, greece, hungary, italy, netherlands, norway, poland, portugal, spain, turkey, romania , united states. canada withdrew participation awacs program in 2014. in addition, aircrew training squadron operates on equally multinational basis under direction of training wing.
