garibaldi s men started fights on june 21, 1866. after initial minor clashes, were, due italian defeat @ battle of custoza ordered retreat south-western tip of lake garda on june 25. austrians choose not pursue, garibaldi renewed advance on july 3, wounded during attack on enemy mountain position. nonetheless advance of cacciatori successful , on july 12th storo , condino occupied.

contemporarily, actions took place near tonale pass, 3,000 austrians had established defensive line between vezza d oglio , temù. during battle of vezza d oglio, july 4 austrians dislodged positions attack of italian regular bersaglieri infantry, suffered heavy losses. on july 2 austrian column crossed stelvio pass , captured bormio , mortirolo pass, later defeated force italian national guard (see operations in valtellina).
