the london plane-tree or hybrid plane has long been considered hybrid derived cross between p. occidentalis , p. orientalis, despite origin not clear. experts think originated in london , others in spain or in natural or cultivated hybrid form (or not) in turkey. question has not been investigated modern molecular methods. consequence, nomenclature hotly debated, extent anglo-saxon authors deny priority of name used in spain (following maria da luz de oliveira tavares monteiro da rocha afonso, 1990, see references). plant not found in wild, though appears in naturalized form along banks of rivers , streams.

the references consulted not agree whether fruit nucule or achene, difference between 2 depends on size of pericarp , extent of lignification. fruit dry, indehiscent, monocarpelar , monospermatic.
