the varsity football team known golden avalanche prior program being terminated in 1960. marquette football posted several successful seasons in 1920s , 1930s including undefeated seasons in 1922, 1923, , 1930. 1922 1923 marquette held 17–0–1 record , outscored opponents 374–15. 1930 marquette squad posted 7 shutouts , held 155–7 scoring margin. 1920 1936 marquette held 90–32–6 (.727) record. 1936 golden avalanche had 7–1 regular season record top 20 ranking , played in inaugural cotton bowl classic against texas christian university, led quarterback sammy baugh; tcu won 16–6.
after accumulating several years of budget deficits university, football program dropped after 3–6 season in 1960 under second-year coach lisle blackbourn, along track , cross country programs. last successful season 1953 , last 7 seasons had combined 10–44–3 (.202) record, including 2 straight winless seasons (1956 , 1957), under new head coach johnny druze. @ time, marquette had 78-year football tradition , largest catholic university in united states. cross country reinstated , track returned in 1964; football @ marquette returned @ club level in 1967.
