on august 8, 2008, same day 2008 olympic games officially commenced, georgian armed forces moved forward take control of tskhinvali. in next few days, russian troops pushed georgian army out of south ossetia , moved farther, occupying gori in georgia proper. following end of hostilities, federation council of russia called extraordinary session august 25, 2008 discuss recognition of abkhazia , south ossetia. on august 25, federation council unanimously voted ask russian president recognise independence of south ossetia


and abkhazia. russian parliament voted in favour of motion following day. unilateral recognition russia met condemnation members of united nations (including france, germany, great britain , united states) , nato, organization security , co-operation in europe , european council, due violation of georgia s territorial integrity, of numerous united nations resolutions on abkhazia , of international law.
