solomons island road major north-south artery through prince frederick , carries 2 maryland route designations: maryland route 2, runs baltimore solomons, , maryland route 4, extension of pennsylvania avenue washington, d.c., continues past solomons on governor thomas johnson bridge across patuxent river st. mary s county. route 4 dualized in mid-1970s, , commuter buses run on washington. routes 2 , 4 join north of prince frederick near sunderland. route 2 there north two-lane road annapolis.


in 2009, portion of route 2-4 in prince frederick widened 3 lanes in each direction.


maryland route 231 (hallowing point road) intersects solomons island road , runs west, crossing patuxent river , continuing charles county. maryland route 402 (dares beach road) leads east dares beach on chesapeake bay. maryland route 765 serves prince frederick s main street , provides access courthouse , government center.


in mid-1990s, series of new loop roads , side streets approved in prince frederick in order divert local traffic off route 2-4 , alleviate thru-traffic congestion. first of these roads, prince frederick boulevard, has been completed between maryland route 231 , stoakley road. second portion of road, chesapeake boulevard, opened in 2010 on eastern side of route 2-4 , provides access new calvert middle school. additional roads planned around southern portions of town.
