history
1998–2001: formation , 1 touch

the sugababes formed in 1998 saints manager ron tom. siobhán donaghy , mutya buena, both aged 13, had been signed solo artists, decided work after performing @ same showcase. while working in studio, buena invited best friend keisha buchanan watch them. manager tom decided 3 girls trio, likening different appearances united colors of benetton campaign. dubbed sugababies, group s name tweaked sugababes when signed london records give group more mature image.

the group s debut single, overload , peaked @ number 6 on uk singles chart in 2000 , nominated brit award best single. group co-wrote of tracks on debut album 1 touch of saints producer cameron mcvey. 1 touch peaked @ number 26 on uk albums chart. album produced 3 more top 40 hits— new year , run cover , soul sound . sales of 1 touch did not meet london records expectations, , dropped group in 2001. later certified gold bpi , had sold 220,000 copies in uk 2008 according music week.

during japanese promotional tour in august 2001, donaghy left group. stated wanted pursue fashion career, diagnosed clinical depression amid reports of in-fighting amongst group s members. donaghy later stated forced out of group buchanan , called buchanan first bully in life. former atomic kitten member heidi range announced donaghy s replacement.

2002–2004: angels dirty faces , three

having started work on second album new member range, trio looked new record label, signing island records. first single on new label, freak me scored group first uk number 1 single. follow-up single round round debuted on top of uk singles chart , peaked @ number 2 in ireland, netherlands , new zealand. both singles certified silver bpi. on of success of singles, group s second album, angels dirty faces, debuted @ number 2 on uk albums chart , later certified triple platinum, selling million copies in uk alone. date highest-selling album. in uk, third single album, ballad titled stronger , gained girls third consecutive top ten hit in native country. track released double-a side angels dirty faces in uk, latter song chosen theme tune powerpuff girls movie. fourth single, sting-sampling shape , made top ten in netherlands , ireland in 2003.

around time, group s perceived moodiness , alleged backstage catfights, , press junket tantrums tabloid fodder in britain. surrounded continuous rumours of in-fighting within group , constant split reports. rumours suggested buchanan , buena had bullied range, although range herself repeatedly denied such allegations; buena later admitted didn t talk when first joined. buchanan claimed there 1 serious fallout between herself , range during 2004 gig in dublin, regarding britney spears toxic .

2005–2006: taller in more ways , overloaded: singles collection

after hiatus, sugababes released thirteenth single, push button in october 2005. song debuted @ number 1 in uk , remained in position 3 consecutive weeks. peaked @ number 1 in ireland, austria , new zealand, , reached top 3 across europe , in australia. certified silver in uk, later nominated @ brit awards best single. parent album taller in more ways became group s first uk number 1 album. group number 1 on singles, album, airplay , download charts simultaneously, making them first girl group achieve such feat. taller in more ways certified double platinum in uk.

the third-lineup of sugababes

following apparent illness prevented buena promoting follow-up single ugly , announced on 21 december 2005 buena had left sugababes. according announcement on official website, buena s decision based purely on personal reasons following birth of daughter. amelle berrabah joined sugababes in late december 2005, having been chosen group s management replace buena.

the third single taller in more ways re-recorded version of red dress , released in 2006, , gave sugababes third consecutive top 5 hit album, entering uk singles chart @ number 4. berrabah re-recorded 3 of album s twelve tracks , co-wrote new song buchanan , range named re gone . tracks appeared on re-release of taller in more ways reached number 18 on uk albums chart. fourth , final single taller in more ways follow me home , released in uk in june, charted @ number 32.

in mid-2006, group returned studio record 2 new tracks first greatest hits collection, titled overloaded: singles collection. lead single compilation, easy peaked @ number 8 on uk singles chart, whilst compilation album, released in november 2006, peaked @ number 3. album, certified platinum bpi, has sold 598,000 copies.

2007–2008: change , catfights , spotlights

in march 2007, sugababes collaborated fellow british girl group girls aloud eighteenth single, cover of song walk way aerosmith. track released official single comic relief. walk way became group s fifth uk number 1 single.

in september 2009, berrabah reported have left sugababes. had missed 2 engagements promoting sweet 7. on 21 september, revealed buchanan, sole original member of group, had left sugababes. buchanan s place filled jade ewen, uk s 2009 eurovision song contest entrant. buchanan revealed on twitter not decision leave, resulting in journalists describing having been sacked .

i m sad no longer part of sugababes ... although not choice leave, s time enter new chapter in life ... state there no arguments, bullying or of sort lead [sic] this. breakdown in communication , lack of trust can result in many different things.

in march 2010, former group member mutya buena applied european trademarks authority ownership of group s name. application submitted amid controversy of buchanan s departure, in buena insisted sugababes have ended without founding member still in group. confirmed buena had obtained rights use name on paper, cardboard , goods; namely stationery, paper gift wrap , paper gift wrapping ribbons. revealed in same month dropped roc nation, due poor sales of sweet 7.

2011: original reformation , split

the sugababes began recording eighth studio album in april 2010. in 2011, group , management crown talent & media group left record label of ten years, island records, new three-album distribution deal sony music s rca records, crown talent & media group acting record label. in july 2011, sugababes commented on new album, stating: s bit darker, tougher , quite edgy. in september 2011, band stated new album showcases personalities: feels our personalities part of album. promotional single under new label, freedom , released free on 25 september 2011. group began hiatus in 2012 work on solo projects: range participated in seventh series of dancing on ice, berrabah worked on solo material , ewen competed contestant on first series of splash!

in april, reported original line-up of sugababes—donaghy, buena , buchanan—had signed record deal worth £1 million polydor records under name mutya keisha siobhan. reunited trio known have recorded mnek, asterix , craze & hoax. on 25 june 2012, announced release new music in late august 2012, did not happen. however, scottish singer-songwriter emeli sandé confirmed mtv news writing songs them, , group performed mks @ new year s eve party. both range , berrabah have wished them luck new venture. on 20 july 2012, buchanan kicked out of group in 2009, revealed disappointed treatment received, went on wish current line-up best of luck .

on 15 march 2013, ewen confirmed sugababes record new music before end of year , stating: think come again @ end of year. there more recording but, there no release date anytime soon. on 16 may 2013 amelle berrabah revealed group had been writing new material new album , hoped release new music in 2014. however, fellow member jade ewen later expressed feelings towards group s future being uncertain, stating group pretty done , led reports suggesting group have split. controversy on group s future arose when berrabah stated believed group in late 2014, therefore unsure band s future intentions are.

on 6 september 2013, interview published quoting ewen confirming group had split. ewen quoted saying tricky 1 because don t feel comfortable lying, saying re in studio recording , re going bring music out next year, seems favoured line, said. think s unfair fans , should honest. band being on not choice. kind of unlucky in came in [to sugababes] towards end of cycle when things naturally came end. there drama surrounding group, think music got lost. don t drama , negativity. kind of fizzled out 2 years ago. think lineup changes have got factor, can t away it, said. d lying if didn t think same when approached. like, going work? people going accept it?

speaking digital spy @ disney s share magic christmas party on oxford street on 6 november 2013, mutya buena said keeping open mind reclaiming sugababes name again. never never, said. think should have open mind. , our name! buena owns rights use sugababes name on paper, cardboard , goods made these materials, stationery , gift wrapping products. in late january 2014 range contradicted ewen s statement, saying group merely on hiatus follow solo projects. speaking on if d broken or not, range stated, not officially don t have plans in near future.

on 13 january 2015, original member of group, keisha buchanan filed have sugababes name trademarked in united states.
