tufts main campus located on walnut hill in medford , somerville, 5 miles (8.0 km) boston. campus houses undergraduates in arts & sciences , engineering, graduate programs @ fletcher school of law , diplomacy , of graduate programs in arts & sciences , engineering. while majority of campus in medford, somerville line intersects it, placing parts of lower campus in somerville , leading common terms uphill , downhill .


the uphill portion of campus comprises academic , residential rez quads, , enclosed wrought-iron fence. classes contributed building of fence commemorated along length. academic quad contains earliest buildings , built middle of 19th century beginning of 20th century. 1 of tufts first buildings, ballou hall constructed 1852-1854 , designed in italianate style known boston architect gridley james fox bryant. ballou hall later restored mckim, mead, , white in 1955-56, , houses offices of president, provost, , several vice presidents , deans. other notable buildings include: packard hall (1856), east hall (1860), west hall (1871), goddard chapel (1882), goddard hall (1883), barnum hall (1884), , eaton hall (1908). new york firm whitfield & king responsible design of eaton hall.

the downhill portion can accessed memorial stairs. designed olmsted brothers in 1920s, memorial stairs form 1 of main entrances university , allows direct access engineering school academic quad. notable buildings around engineering school include bromfield-pearson hall (1893), robinson hall (1899), , curtis hall (1894). boston architect george albert clough responsible design of curtis hall , goddard hall. additionally arland dirlam responsible designs of many buildings downhill. these include cohen auditorium (1950), hodgdon hall (1954), , jackson gymnasium (1947). administrative offices occupy surrounding neighborhoods , nearby davis square, tufts makes payments in lieu of taxes on of tax-exempt (educational) properties.

tufts has satellite campus in talloires, france @ tufts european center, former benedictine priory built in 11th century. priory purchased in 1958 donald macjannet , wife charlotte , used summer camp site several years before macjannets gave campus tufts in 1978. each year center hosts number of summer study programs, , enrolled students live local families. tufts summit program american high school students during month of july. tufts in talloires 6-week program tufts undergraduates extends middle of may until end of june. additionally tufts in annecy 4-week program provides french language learners chance practice , learn language. site host of international conferences , summits, notably talloires declaration united 22 universities toward goal of sustainability. talloires campus has been ranked 1 of best branch campuses national association of branch campus administrators.
