john hancock, led team 1926 season, first recorded coach of san diego state.


lee waymire

lee waymire san diego state s second coach, serving 1927 season.


harold g. brucker

harold first coach remain more 1 year, coaching aztecs in 1928 , 1929.


morris gross

after failing field team in 1930, morris gross coached aztecs in 1931 , 1932.


charles r. smith

after again failing field team in 1933, 1934, , 1935, charles r. smith took program over, becoming first san diego state coach extended tenure. smith coached aztecs 1936 through 1964, three-year interruption 1943 1945 during time no team fielded.


lyle olsen

lyle olsen succeeded smith, coaching aztecs 1965 through 1971.


jim dietz

jim dietz coached aztecs 31 years, 1972 through 2002. record of 1230–751–18 makes him 1 of winningest college baseball coaches of time. dietz coached number of players went on successful major league baseball careers, including bud black , tony gwynn. took position @ san diego state in 1971 week after accepting , turning down offer coach basketball @ lewis–clark normal school—now lewis–clark state college.


tony gwynn

a native of long beach, california, , alumnus of san diego state, tony gwynn returned coach alma mater after end of 20-year hall of fame career. gwynn hired in fall of 2001 replace dietz @ following 2002 season.


the aztecs home field renamed tony gwynn stadium in honor in 1997.
