men s basketball

the men s basketball team ninth in ncaa postseason appearances all-time (45), including 30 ncaa tournament appearances (t-11th time). warriors, coached al mcguire, won 1977 ncaa tournament , runners-up in 1974. maurice bo ellis member of each of teams, , remains marquette player appear in 2 final fours.


the 2003 team, coached tom crean , led on court dwyane wade, robert jackson, steve novak, , travis diener, upset top-ranked kentucky reach final 4 of 2003 ncaa tournament. in midwest regional final in minneapolis, wade became fourth player record triple-double in ncaa tournament game. named ap all-american 2 years in row , conference usa player of year.


marquette has continued re-emerge national power after 2003. program has made 7 straight ncaa tournament appearances dating 2006, , has made 3 consecutive ncaa sweet 16 appearances in 2011, 2012 , 2013. in 2012, marquette experienced best season since 2003, tying single season school record wins (27), finishing second place in big east first time in program history, , finishing ranked in top 10 of ap , usa today/coaches poll first time since 2003. jae crowder named big east player of year, first such conference player of year honor marquette player since dwyane wade in 2003,

the women s basketball team coached carolyn kieger. program has experienced success in recent years under former coach terri mitchell s direction, including run championship game of wnit, women finished runners-up in 2006, , won championship in 2008. recently, team made second round of ncaa tournament in 2011, defeated top-seeded tennessee. marquette women s basketball has qualified ncaa tournament 7 times since 1994. team plays in al mcguire center, named after former marquette men s coach.


the team notably hired tyler summitt, 21-year-old son of legendary tennessee coach pat summitt, assistant effective 2012–13 season, announcement coming on same day mother announced retirement after 38 years leading lady vols.


in 2006, marquette traveled st. thomas participate in paradise jam tournament. in opening round marquette defeated western michigan 74–61. in second round marquette defeated auburn 65–61. on final day, marquette beat xavier 73–53 finish 3–0 record , win 2006 paradise jam championship (st. john division).


cross-country , track

the cross-country , track teams have produced 5 olympians, 13 ncaa champions , 27 all-americans. except dwyane wade, marquette s successful student-athlete track , field sprinter ralph metcalfe, world-record holder , olympic gold medalist. olympic silver medalist melvin bus shimek (1904–1987) longtime coach of both programs; top distance runner @ mu in 1920s , coached until 1976, last 29 years head coach, total of 52 years athlete , coach @ marquette. shimek set school record in mile in 1927 , held on thirty years.


both programs dropped football in december 1960, cross country reinstated within weeks athletic program retain ncaa membership, required varsity intercollegiate sport in each season. track missed 3 spring seasons (1961–1963) , returned in march 1964, without scholarships.


football (varsity)

the varsity football team known golden avalanche prior program being terminated in 1960. marquette football posted several successful seasons in 1920s , 1930s including undefeated seasons in 1922, 1923, , 1930. 1922 1923 marquette held 17–0–1 record , outscored opponents 374–15. 1930 marquette squad posted 7 shutouts , held 155–7 scoring margin. 1920 1936 marquette held 90–32–6 (.727) record. 1936 golden avalanche had 7–1 regular season record top 20 ranking , played in inaugural cotton bowl classic against texas christian university, led quarterback sammy baugh; tcu won 16–6.


after accumulating several years of budget deficits university, football program dropped after 3–6 season in 1960 under second-year coach lisle blackbourn, along track , cross country programs. last successful season 1953 , last 7 seasons had combined 10–44–3 (.202) record, including 2 straight winless seasons (1956 , 1957), under new head coach johnny druze. @ time, marquette had 78-year football tradition , largest catholic university in united states. cross country reinstated , track returned in 1964; football @ marquette returned @ club level in 1967.


marquette stadium, football team s home since 1924, dismantled in 1978. located in merrill park neighborhood west of university, stadium had seating capacity of 24,000 @ peak. used green bay packers of nfl 3 home games in 1952; packers played several home games in milwaukee every season 1933 through 1994; previous games played state fair park in west allis , succeeding years @ new county stadium. marquette played majority of home schedule @ county stadium in 1957 , 1958.


men s golf

marquette university fields men s team golf. former head coach, tim grogan, honored big east conference men s golf coach of year in 2006 , 2008. golf team holds marquette s big east championships, won in 2008 , 2015. mike van sickle, class of 2009, named ping division all-american honorable mention list in 2007 , 2008. first-team all-american in 2009. van sickle holds school record single-season average @ 70.00 strokes per eighteen holes, , sub-par rounds @ 86.


lacrosse

on december 16, 2010, university announced adding men s , women s lacrosse teams begin play independents in 2012–13 academic year, before becoming full members of big east conference in men s , women s lacrosse in 2013–14. team s home field valley fields.


soccer

the men s , women s soccer programs have achieved varying degrees of success. in 2006, men s team won 1 game , finished last in conference while women made run ncaa postseason tournament.


coach louis bennett joined men s program after years of accomplishment @ nearby milwaukee team match women s success.


in june 2007, alumnus dennis klein donated $1 million spearhead new, $5 million european-style soccer stadium marquette. new stadium set open in september 2008.
