this monument, rock garden, 1 of famous sites in india. nek chand, creator of place, died in 2015. still site visited millions of people every year.


in spare time, chand began collecting materials demolition sites around city. recycled these materials own vision of divine kingdom of sukrani, choosing gorge in forest near sukhna lake work. gorge had been designated land conservancy, forest buffer established in 1902 nothing built on. chand s work illegal, able hide eighteen years before discovered authorities in 1975. time, had grown 13-acre (5.3 ha) complex of interlinked courtyards, each filled hundreds of pottery-covered concrete sculptures of dancers, musicians, , animals. made recycled materials, chand built mass cement , sand mix before adding final coating of smoothly burnished pure cement combined waste materials such broken glass, bangles, crockery, mosaic , iron-foundry slag.

his work in serious danger of being demolished, able public opinion on side, , in 1986 park inaugurated public space. nek chand given salary, title ( sub-divisional engineer, rock garden ), , workforce of 50 labourers concentrate full-time on work. appeared on indian stamp in 1983. rock garden still made out of recycled materials; , government s help, chand able set collection centres around city waste, rags , broken ceramics.


when chand left country on lecture tour in 1996, city withdrew funding, , vandals attacked park. rock garden society took on administration , upkeep of unique visionary environment. garden visited on 5 thousand people daily, second popular location in india (after taj mahal) total of more twelve million visitors since inception.
