1979–80 ushl becomes all-junior league 7 teams in 2 divisions. north division: hennepin nordiques, bloomington jr. stars, green bay bobcats, , st. paul vulcans. south division: austin mavericks, sioux city musketeers, , waterloo black hawks.
1980–81 des moines buccaneers enter league. waterloo black hawks move dubuque , become fighting saints. hennepin nordiques move waterloo , become black hawks. north division: austin, bloomington, green bay, , st. paul. south division: des moines, dubuque, sioux city, , waterloo.
1981–82 green bay folds. remaining 7 teams merge 1 division.
1983–84 north iowa huskies enter league.
1984–85 madison capitols , thunder bay flyers enter league. bloomington changes name minneapolis stars.
1985–86 minneapolis folds. austin relocates rochester , renamed mustangs.
1986–87 omaha lancers enter league.
1991–92 madison changes name wisconsin capitols.
1994–95 green bay gamblers enter league.
1995–96 wisconsin folds. fargo-moorhead bears enter league. st. paul changes name twin cities vulcans.
1996–97 fargo-moorhead bears disband. fargo-moorhead ice sharks enter league. lincoln stars enter league. league returns divisional play. north division: fargo-moorhead, green bay, north iowa, rochester, thunder bay, twin cities. south division: des moines, dubuque, lincoln, omaha, sioux city, waterloo.
1997–98 usa hockey national team development program plays 24-game schedule in ushl.
1998–99 ushl agrees play full-season schedule usa hockey national team development program part of two-year agreement. league moves three-division format. east division: dubuque, green bay, team usa, , waterloo. central division: des moines, north iowa, rochester, thunder bay, , twin cities. west division: fargo-moorhead, lincoln, omaha, , sioux city.
1999–00 sioux falls stampede enters league. north iowa relocates cedar rapids , renamed roughriders. league moves two-division format. west division: des moines, fargo-moorhead, lincoln, omaha, sioux city, sioux falls, twin cities. east division: cedar rapids, dubuque, green bay, rochester, thunder bay, usa development, waterloo.
2000–01 thunder bay ceases operations. fargo-moorhead moves bensenville, illinois , becomes chicago steel. twin cities relocates kearney, nebraska , renamed tri-city storm. team usa plays 34-game league schedule.
2001–02 dubuque fighting saints relocate tulsa, oklahoma , become tulsa crude. topeka, kansas gains expansion team called topeka scarecrows.
2002–03 rochester ceases operations. tulsa ceases operations. omaha relocates council bluffs, ia., , changes name river city lancers.
2003–04 danville wings enter league. topeka moves st. louis , becomes heartland eagles.
2004–05 danville moves indianapolis , becomes indiana ice. st. louis suspends operations. river city lancers change name omaha lancers.
2006–07 ohio jr. blue jackets join league after purchasing membership of former thunder bay flyers.
2007–08 ohio jr. blue jackets cease operations @ conclusion of season.
2008–09 fargo force join league.
2009–10 united states national development team (team usa) rejoins league competitive member. youngstown phantoms expansion team added. omaha lancers relocate omaha, ne.
2010–11 dubuque fighting saints rejoin league through expansion in western division , muskegon lumberjacks join league expansion team in eastern division.
2011–12 division realignment dubuque moving east , waterloo moving west.
2013 ushl announced on august 5 madison capitols madison, wisconsin rejoin ushl expansion team 2014–15 season, playing in eastern division.
2014 ushl announced on april 1 expansion franchise, bloomington thunder, bloomington, illinois, start play in 2014–15, playing in eastern division.
2014 ushl announces indiana ice granted dormancy status 2014–15 season while team focuses on locating permanent home facility in indianapolis area. of conclusion of 2016-17 season team remains in dormancy team continues locate permanent home facility.
2015 chicago steel move geneva, illinois, starting 2015–16 season. steel played in bensenville, illinois, 2000 2014.
