in 1905, italy made mogadishu capital of newly established italian somaliland. italians subsequently referred city mogadiscio. after world war i, surrounding territory came under italian control resistance.
thousands of italians settled in mogadishu , founded small manufacturing companies. developed agricultural areas in south near capital, such janale , villaggio duca degli abruzzi (present-day jowhar). in 1930s, new buildings , avenues built. 114 km (71 mi) narrow-gauge railway laid mogadishu jowhar. asphalted road, strada imperiale, constructed , intended link mogadishu addis ababa.
in 1940, italo-somali population numbered 22,000, accounting on 44% of city s population of 50,000 residents. mogadishu remained capital of italian somaliland throughout latter polity s existence. in world war ii captured british forces in february 1941.
after world war ii mogadishu made capital of trust territory of somaliland, italian administered fiduciary political entity under onu mandate, ten years (1950–1960).
