brugada syndrome genetic disease result in mutations in sodium ion channel (gene scn5a) of myocytes in heart. brugada syndrome can result in ventricular fibrillation , potentially death. major cause of sudden unexpected cardiac death in young, otherwise healthy people. while characteristic patterns of brugada syndrome on electrocardiogram may seen regularly, abnormal pattern seen spontaneously due unknown triggers or after challenged particular drugs. ajmaline used intravenously test brugada syndrome since both affect sodium ion channel. in afflicted person induced ajmaline, electrocardiogram show characteristic pattern of syndrome st segment abnormally elevated above baseline. due complications arise ajmaline challenge, specialized nurse should perform administration , have emergency defibrillator nearby.
