Blood supply Cerebral circulation
blood supply brain divided anterior , posterior segments, relating different arteries supply brain. 2 main pairs of arteries internal carotid arteries (supply anterior brain) , vertebral arteries (supplying brainstem , posterior brain).
the anterior , posterior cerebral circulations interconnected via bilateral posterior communicating arteries. part of circle of willis, provides backup circulation brain. in case 1 of supply arteries occluded, circle of willis provides interconnections between anterior , posterior cerebral circulation along floor of cerebral vault, providing blood tissues otherwise become ischemic.
anterior cerebral circulation
the anterior cerebral circulation blood supply anterior portion of brain. supplied following arteries:
internal carotid arteries: these large arteries medial branches of common carotid arteries in neck enter skull, opposed external carotid branches supply facial tissues. internal carotid artery branches anterior cerebral artery , continues form middle cerebral artery
anterior cerebral artery (aca)
anterior communicating artery: connects both anterior cerebral arteries, within , along floor of cerebral vault.
middle cerebral artery (mca)
posterior cerebral circulation
the anterior , posterior circulations meet @ circle of willis, pictured here, rests @ top of brainstem
.
the posterior cerebral circulation blood supply posterior portion of brain, including occipital lobes, cerebellum , brainstem. supplied following arteries:
vertebral arteries: these smaller arteries branch subclavian arteries supply shoulders, lateral chest , arms. within cranium 2 vertebral arteries fuse basilar artery.
posterior inferior cerebellar artery (pica)
basilar artery: supplies midbrain, cerebellum, , branches posterior cerebral artery
anterior inferior cerebellar artery (aica)
pontine branches
superior cerebellar artery (sca)
posterior cerebral artery (pca)
posterior communicating artery
