the air wing formed in 1977 , organisationally part of botswana defence force.
all squadrons designated z, used designation squadron . main base near molepolole , built foreign contractors between 1992 , 1996. base multi-stage project included runways, taxiways, extensive shelter , ordnance storage facilities, headquarters facility , large complex of living quarters , support buildings. referred eagle project, base has received continual improvements since inception. other airports used sir seretse khama international airport @ gaborone , francistown. airfield near maun used forward operating location propeller aircraft there fighters.
the backbone of air wing consists of squadron of former canadian cf-116s locally designated bf-5s. thirteen ex-canadian cf-116s (ten single-seater cf-5as , 3 trainer cf-5bs) ordered in 1996 replace strikemasters, 3 single-seaters , 2 dual-seaters delivered in 2000. aircraft re-designated oj-1 through 16. transport, air wing uses britten-norman defenders, casa c-212 aviocars, casa cn-235s , c-130b hercules. latest addition transport fleet ex-amarc c-130 hercules complement 2 existing aircraft.
a combination of bell 412ep , 412sp helicopters operated z21 , perform variety of functions, including search , rescue, medivac, anti-poaching , troop/vip transport. in 1993, 9 ex-us army/amarc cessna o-2as delivered use against poaching.
the air wing has acquired 14 bat hawk surveillance aircraft. 6 of used bdf border patrols , day day reconnaissance. 4 used botswana police services , 4 department of wildlife , parks. main role being anti poaching. [1]
in 2011, pilatus aircraft ltd announced botswana defence force had selected pc-7 mkii turboprop trainer aircraft replace pilatus pc-7 fleet has been in service since 1990. contract value approximately 40 million swiss francs procure fleet of 5 pc-7 mkii turboprop trainer aircraft, ground-based training system including computer-based training, spares, support equipment, pilot , technician conversion training elements. contract signed in gaborone on 13 april 2011.
