the first western fair held in september 1868 in downtown london, northeast of current location of victoria park. organizers had hoped use crystal palace barracks main exhibition area. livestock shows took place on parade grounds outside crystal palace.


in 1887, when fair gained legal status through provincial charter , act of incorporation, moved 900 king street in east london, fairgrounds remain today. present fairgrounds purchased $65,000. except eight-year period between 1939 , 1947 when canadian department of national defence occupied grounds, western fair has operated on new site.


john huse saunders president of western fair association (wfa) 22 years. devoted more 50 years western fair , known throughout north america poultry breeder. after receiving honorary presidential status wfa changed by-laws , limited term 3 years.


in 2011, former western fair association re-branded western fair district, better represent reality grounds , building facilities had expanded beyond 9-day fair year-round activities.
