hip hop beginnings

maxi founded soul food cafe system dj in 1984, having discovered hip hop year earlier. maxi first aired sound dj calling in soul kitchen dj maxi jazz on pirate radio station reach fm - london in 1985/6. transferred sound pirate radio station lwr in 1987.


in 1989, soul food cafe band picked tam tam records, dance wing of savage records. maxi founded namu records in 1992 in order release band s material in form of 3 ep s , band toured support act various artists, including jamiroquai in amsterdam; soul ii soul in barcelona; galliano in switzerland; , jason rebello in brazil. in 1996 maxi jazz , soul food cafe recorded , released album original groovejuice vol.1 revco records in deptford, south london. after band dissolved, maxi worked throughout europe, , took time out collaborate jah wobble on invaders of heart album, followed live dates wobble collective.

maxi met rollo armstrong in studio , went on form faithless, jamie catto , sister bliss. soka gakkai buddhist, maxi s strong beliefs , band s own strong individual beliefs, contrast name faithless , chosen during writing of song salva mea . rollo had asked maxi write song frustration, maxi relate own experiences. subject matter of maxi s lyrics range upbeat melancholic. work covers range of personal , social issues, including current affairs , social commentary.


in 2006, maxi provided vocals hit tiësto track dance4life . sang alongside robbie williams on single culture collaborative album 1 giant leap.


maxi celebrated 50th birthday on 15 june 2007 in hyde park, london headlining o2 wireless festival 2007. in encore greeted thousands of fans wishing him happy birthday.

in 2015, began fronting newly assembled band of musicians named maxi jazz & e-type boys. jazz provides lead vocals , plays guitar in band. have made number of festival appearances, including @ same events @ faithless billed.
