carrigadrohid castle stands on rock in middle of river lee, adjacent bridge gives village name. erected in 15th century maccarthys of muskerry, extension east , annex north being added in subsequent centuries. besieged parliamentary forces following battle of macroom, , boetius macegan, bishop of ross, hanged reins of own horse outside castle having refused implore irish garrison surrender cromwellian army.
the maccarthys dispossessed, , castle ended in hands of bowen family. has been in ruins since late 18th century. in recent years, local group has been formed aim of preserving castle.
