family , missionary work
joseph h. romig born september 3, 1872 in edwards county, illinois joseph , margaret ricksecker romig, both descendants of moravian immigrants had settled in tuscarawas county, ohio. grew 9 brothers , sisters on chippewa mission farm near independence, kansas. moravian church sponsored medical training @ hahnemann medical school in philadelphia in exchange pledge serve 7 years doctor @ mission. @ school, met ella mae ervin of kingston, pennsylvania, studying nursing.
in 1896, joseph , ella married, , couple moved bethel, alaska join joseph s older sister edith margaret , husband john henry kilbuck missionaries yup ik people. joseph , ella had 4 children: robert herman (born 1897), margaret maryetta (born 1898), helen elizabeth (born 1901), , howard glenmore (born 1911). time, romig 1 of physicians in alaska. became known dog team doctor traveling dog sled throughout yukon-kuskokwim delta in course of work.
career
in 1903, term of missionary service complete, romig relocated family san francisco, california. there 1906 san francisco earthquake, , ran emergency hospital in aftermath. in 1906, moved alaska take job company physician in nushagak. worked time united states commissioner before moving seward open small hospital.
in 1920s, worked chief surgeon @ st. joseph s hospital in fairbanks before setting hospital in nenana alaska railroad. in 1930, asked head alaska railroad hospital in anchorage. when son, howard, returned stanford university medical school, went private practice together.
joseph romig elected mayor of anchorage in 1937, serving single term. same year, ella mae ervin romig died. in 1939, remarried emily craig, had worked chief of nursing @ railroad hospital.
in 1939, romig appointed chief surgeon @ anchorage s newly constructed providence hospital @ ninth , l street. retired shortly thereafter, purchasing land on later called romig hill. log cabin on property, started board of directors club provided founding members of anchorage rotary club.
death , legacy
joseph , emily romig moved colorado springs, colorado, joseph died in 1951. although buried in colorado, remains later disinterred , moved alaska buried in family plot in anchorage memorial park.. romig junior high school, named in honor, later built on romig hill.
