second floor

the grand staircase, leading second floor.


the second floor contains private living apartments of first family, kitchen. of these rooms used official entertaining, reserved private use. rooms found on second floor include center hall, east sitting hall, lincoln bedroom, lincoln sitting room, president s dining room, queens bedroom, queens sitting room, treaty room, west sitting hall, , yellow oval room. truman balcony accessed floor.


the second floor contains 7 historic rooms: lincoln bedroom, lincoln sitting room, queens bedroom, queens sitting room, treaty room, east sitting hall, , yellow oval room. western half of second floor contains family rooms, kitchen, , family dining room, of may redecorated or undergo architectural revision @ whim of president.


when white house occupied in 1801, eastern half of second floor remained unfinished. later queens suite, lincoln suite, east sitting hall, grand stair, , grand stair landing did not exist. unfinished west sitting hall, not intended sitting hall @ rather grand staircase leading ground floor. second floor completed 1809. before theodore roosevelt renovation of 1902, executive offices of president located @ east end of second floor , public had full , free access these areas.


center hall, east sitting hall, , grand stair

originally known great passage, center hall has been part of design of white house. has not had same structural design. today, load-bearing walls outside treaty room define western side of stair landing. these walls did not exist when white house occupied in 1801. today, center hall, stair landing, , east sitting room on same level. in 1801, 3 small steps outside treaty room led great passage east sitting room. additionally, there no grand stair north of stair landing. when white house opened, simple, narrow private stair led ground floor second floor grand stair today.


the center hall has been used large drawing room , waiting area guests shown yellow oval room. except addition of stair landing, little has changed in center hall. minor decorative elements have been altered, such addition of cornice molding , bookshelves during 1952 reconstruction.


the east sitting hall 1 of 7 historic spaces on second floor. in first half of 1800s, white house treated government office building rather residence, , members of public expected complete access it. wanted see president ascend second floor using private steps , wait in east sitting hall. james hoban, original architect of white house, planned , built double-arched venetian window here provide light possible area. after 1902, public no longer had access second floor, , area has been used small parlor.


the east sitting hall more distinctively set off center hall 1952 reconstruction. steps leading center hall east hall room removed, , small storage spaces added on north , south side of passage. halved width of hall here, created more private east sitting room. narrow servants stair added in north storage area provide additional access third floor.


access center hall provided grand staircase on west end of building. on east end, narrower set of stairs single return gave access. these plain stairs replaced modern grand staircase.

the lincoln bedroom , lincoln sitting room located in southeast corner of second floor. designed , completed in 1809, space contained 2 narrow, north-south running bedchambers toilet room between them. 1825, toilet had been removed , space joined west bedchamber form president s office. area used president s office on next several decades. abraham lincoln used both office , cabinet room, , signed emancipation proclamation in lincoln bedroom in 1863. lincoln sitting room used office presidential aides, although president john tyler used part of office 1841 1845.


the next major reconfiguration of space occurred during 1952 reconstruction of white house, when full bath , toilet built in northeast corner of lincoln sitting room.

the queens bedroom , queens sitting room occupy northeast corner of second floor. when space completed in 1809, mirror of lincoln suite south: 2 narrow bedrooms toilet between them. , lincoln suite, toilet removed 1825 , toilet space joined western bedchamber. instead of office space, however, western two-thirds of space partitioned create storage areas. remaining bedroom became known rose bedroom or pink bedroom, after color of decorating scheme. reserved guest bedroom, , used president s private secretaries—all of whom male, , many of them sons of presidents. 1865, western storage space had been converted clerk s office. first woman occupy bedroom anna roosevelt, moved white house in 1944. 1952 white house reconstruction created full bath , toilet in northeast corner of sitting room.

the treaty room located between lincoln suite , yellow oval room, on south side of east wing of executive residence. when completed in 1809, intended bedroom. 1825, function had changed audience chamber people meet president (whose office next door east). 1865, room had been partitioned. passage taking southern third of room created, permit individuals pass unobserved president s office directly white house library (then occupying yellow oval room). remained of room used cabinet meetings 1865 1902. space used sitting room 1902 1961. 1952 white house reconstruction removed passage. new door opened in southwest corner of room permit direct access yellow oval room.


the space became known treaty room after president john f. kennedy signed partial nuclear test ban treaty in room in 1963. s been used important treaty signings ever since. president richard nixon signed anti-ballistic missile treaty in room in 1972, , president jimmy carter signed camp david accords in room in 1978.

west sitting hall did not exist when white house completed in 1809. james hoban s original design white house had flight of stairs, 1 against north wall , 1 against south wall, on ground floor. these rose landing, , single flight of stairs rose second floor. left small area north , south of staircase, 1865 being called west hall. in 1869, president grant rebuilt stairs single staircase rose against south wall. left space there in single rather divided area, making more useful. new space created on second floor became west sitting hall. considered part of first family s private space, west sitting hall has undergone redecoration every new presidency , not considered historic room.

the family kitchen , president s dining room located in northwest corner of second floor. large bedroom existed here known prince of wales room , after albert, prince of wales stayed in room in 1860.


when part of executive residence completed in 1809, bedroom suite occupied space. private stairs , cosmetology room eastern chamber , closet of suite, bedroom , toilet occupied president s dining room, , lady s dressing room in space occupied family kitchen, kitchen storage space, , pantry.

in 1961, bedroom suite torn out. jacqueline kennedy thought family dining room on state floor cavernous , impersonal raise family in, , decided smaller, more intimate dining room (now president s dining room) should created on second floor. small kitchen took on space once dressing room, pantry , storage space occupying southern half of space. (the storage closet created in now-convex room east accessed new pantry.) bedroom became new family dining room.

the west room, north hall, , east room occupy center section of north wall of executive residence. when area of mansion completed in 1809, single large storeroom occupied space. western wall of east room in place 1825. 2 small storerooms had been created in later north hall constructing short, non-load bearing walls. these walls projected west, dividing room thirds. north hall exists today created 1865 when storage partitions in west room removed.
