northern somali (nsom) dialect subgroups


northern somali spoken more 60% of entire somali population. primary speech area stretches northern somalia parts of eastern , southwestern sections of country. widespread modern distribution result of long series of southward population movements on past ten centuries gulf of aden littoral. northern somali subdivided 3 dialects: northern somali proper (spoken in northwest), darod group (spoken in northeast , along eastern ethiopia frontier), , lower juba group (spoken northern somali settlers in southern riverine areas). northern somali has been used famous somali poets political elite, , has prestige out of somali dialects. due being wide spread, forms basis standard somali. of classical somali poetry recited , composed in northern somali dialect.


lamberti divides northern somali 3 subgroups:



northern somali proper: spoken in regions of woqooyi galbeed, togdheer, sanaag , sool, somalia. dialects belonging group called af-ciise, af-geedabuursi, af-isaaq , partially af-warsangeli , af-dolbahaante.
darod group: spoken in regions of bari, nugal, mudug, in somali region of ethiopia , along ethiopian border in regions of galguduud, bakool , gedo. dialects of group north-eastern dialects (including af-warsangeli , af dolbahaante), af ogaadeen, af-degodiya, af-wardeyg , af-marrehaan. greatest number of speakers overall.
lower juba group: spoken part of northern somali population have immigrated lower juba region in last 100/150 years. territory benaadir-speaking area before arrival of immigrants north, nsom of lower jubba presents many peculiarities typical benaadir dialects , considered benaadirised nsom.
